| Have you ever come up against a dog who didn't fit the protection category? If I'm making any sense....I mean, what happens if the dog proves to pass the first two, but fails protection?

| Oh yes, there are LOTS of dogs who just don't have 'what it takes' to do well in the protection phase of Schutzhund. At a trial, you must get a score of at least a 70 in each phase to pass. If you receive a passing score in only two phases, you do not get a title. If you have a dog that doesn't do well in the protection phase, you have the option of doing the separate tracking and obedience titles if you want to. _________________ Kristen - owner of Hominy Valley GSD RescueGypsy - chow/pitbull mix Deja - German shepherd Naccia - German shepherd Rascal - Gray tabby DSH Spook - Black DSH |

| A giant schnauzer in shutzhund too? I'm impressed...have you only trained german shepherds? Also, which breeds are easiest to train in this field?

Absolutely! Schutzhund was originally developed to determine breed worthiness in the German shepherd dog (GSD), but is not just for the GSD anymore; any breed (or mix) can participate if it has the correct temperament and drives. At our club we have GSDs, Belgian Malinois, a Dutch shepherd (DS) who is also a police dog, a few American Bulldogs, and the Giant Schnauzer (GS). The GS is probably the 'hardest,' toughest dog out there - he's taken several helpers to the ground, dislocated shoulders, caused pulled muscles, and bruises like you wouldn't believe. When he's not on the SchH field, he's at the local hospital doing therapy dog visits in the children's ward. He's the #1 ranked GS in the world in the Köerung.
I, personally, have only worked with GSDs at this sport, so I can't comment on whether certain breeds are more or less difficult to train for it. Really, it depends on the drives and what you have to work with._________________ Kristen - owner of Hominy Valley GSD RescueGypsy - chow/pitbull mix Deja - German shepherd Naccia - German shepherd Rascal - Gray tabby DSH Spook - Black DSH |

| What is the highest score, any of your dogs you've trained, received in this category, or have you had any reach this level?

| I haven't quite gotten to this level yet. I had planned on competing with Deja in a few weeks, but her former owner still has not signed her over to me on paper, and I'm not trialing with a dog that's not in my name. Not gonna happen. So it'll probably be next year. _________________ Kristen - owner of Hominy Valley GSD RescueGypsy - chow/pitbull mix Deja - German shepherd Naccia - German shepherd Rascal - Gray tabby DSH Spook - Black DSH |

| I haven't see where anyone asked this question...the dogs, whose are they? do they come from special breeders, or do the trainers own them?

| Which dogs are you referring to, Grace? _________________ Kristen - owner of Hominy Valley GSD RescueGypsy - chow/pitbull mix Deja - German shepherd Naccia - German shepherd Rascal - Gray tabby DSH Spook - Black DSH |

| I think she means, do the dogs chosen for the training come directly from the breeder, or can a pet owner volunteer their pets?

| Anyone can participate, as long as their dog has the correct temperament and drives, but the majority of the dogs do come from breeders who breed specifically for working venues (ie: police work, SAR, SchH, etc.), rather than pet or show breeders. _________________ Kristen - owner of Hominy Valley GSD RescueGypsy - chow/pitbull mix Deja - German shepherd Naccia - German shepherd Rascal - Gray tabby DSH Spook - Black DSH |
