This is where we are with the dumbbell so far.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KfJ8kWC79X0

I call this the 'steel toed boot stage.' The dumbbell weighs 2.5lbs and it would really hurt if it landed on sock/bare feet!!

Slow & steady. We'll get there!

And for anyone interested, here's a link to the method I'm using: http://shirleychong.com/keepers/retrieve.html

And a video of one of the helpers biting the dust on a courage test. He did a nice job of falling safely for the dog, but I probably would still be laying there trying to breathe!

This is from a couple of days ago. It is the 2nd time I've worked with the dumbbell with Naccia. At the end, she actually grabbed on and held the dumbbell for a couple of seconds, which is what I was working towards, but certainly not expecting during this session!

And this one is from tonight. It is the mat targeting I have been working on with her. She's doing SUPER good now! I've still not added a cue yet, though. I'm not sure if I ...

This weekend, my Club hosted a seminar with Oliver Schafflhuber from Germany. I really enjoyed it and feel like I learned a lot. Oliver is a super helper - catering his style to the needs of each individual dog - and was a really nice guy. I hope we can bring him back again in the future.

Here are a few videos of Naccia working with him and our club helper.

Marker training is something I'm relatively new to, but feel that it is probably one of the best ways of communicating with your dog when you are training that there is.
What IS Schutzhund?

What is Schutzhund?

Schutzhund is a German word meaning "protection dog". It refers to a sport that focuses on developing and evaluating those traits in dogs that make them more useful and happier companions to their owners. Schutzhund work concentrates on three parts. Many are familiar with the obedience work of the American Kennel Club's affiliates and will recognize the first two parts, tracking and obedience. The Schutzhund standards for the third part, protection work, are ...
