Bulldogs attack?

A pack of dogs mauled a 22-year-old developmentally delayed woman in Dixie County on Thursday afternoon. The woman survived the attack but was expected to undergo multiple surgeries to recover.

According to the Dixie County Sheriff’s Office, the attack happened in the 100 block of NE 835th St. in Old Town at about 4:30 p.m. A witness told deputies he saw the woman being attacked in the roadway by at least six dogs. The man said that before he could reach the woman, the dogs had begun to maul her. When the witness got to the woman’s side, the dogs ran off.

Sheriff’s spokesman Capt. Chad Reed said the woman had been bitten many times and had puncture wounds on her head, face, neck, chest, abdomen, arms and legs.

The woman was taken to Shands at the University of Florida in stable condition, Reed said.

The Animal Control Division of the sheriff’s office confiscated and quarantined three bulldogs, four mixed breed dogs and eight newborn puppies. Reed said the animals were taken from the residence of the reported owners of the dogs, Jacqualine and Elizabeth Edgell.

Reed said deputies were dispatched to the Edgell home in Nov. 2007 in response to another report of an attack on a human by multiple dogs. The outcome of that situation was not immediately available.

The bulldogs taken from the home on Thursday appeared to be in good health, but Reed said the four mixed breed and eight puppies appeared to be malnourished.

An investigation is continuing and criminal charges were pending early Friday morning.
