TAVARES - Animal-control officials said today they will seek a court order to euthanize two pit bulls who attacked a jogger Saturday if the owners won't put the animals down.
The jogger, Tracy Whigham, 22, of Zellwood, suffered severe wounds to her right shoulder and left leg when bitten by the dogs about 4:30 p.m., according to a Lake County sheriff's report.
She was flown to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where an updated report of her condition was not immediately available today.
The animals, owned by sisters Jesica and Jessie Iaquinca of County Road 44 in Eustis, have been quarantined by law at the Lake County Animal Control Shelter since the attack on Getford Road. The two dogs will remain in the shelter's custody for at least the next 10 days, Animal Services Director Marjorie Boyd said.
Boyd said she plans to "highly suggest" that the owners euthanize the dogs.
"My job is public safety," she said. "We want to prevent a reoccurrence."
If the owners will not euthanize the dogs, county officials will ask a judge to declare the two pit bulls "dangerous" and let the county euthanize them.
The sheriff's report did not list a contact number for the owners.
