CONCRETE, Wash. -- A 9-month-old has life-threatening injuries after being bitten twice in 24 hours by the family’s dog in Concrete, said Chief Criminal Deputy Will Reichardt of the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office.
The baby was crawling on the living room floor Aug. 2 when the 3-year-old Rhodesian ridgeback/Labrador mix named Hercules bit the child several times on the head, Reichardt said.
The baby was transported to the hospital and later airlifted to Seattle Children's Hospital with multiple puncture wounds to the face, scalp and eye, Reichardt said. The child was released on Aug. 10 after receiving care in the pediatric intensive care.
Less than 24 hours earlier, the child had been bitten by the same dog and required switches to reattach part of their ear, Reichardt said.
On Tuesday deputies referred an assault charge to the prosecutor’s office for the baby’s grandmother, a 46-year-old woman who was watching the child when the biting occurred. Deputies said she was also aware of the first biting incident.
The baby's parents and grandparents live in the same house in the 8000 block of Russell Road in Concrete.
The sheriff's office has no previous history of problems with the dog Hercules. Hercules is currently under quarantine at a local veterinary office.
Skagit County animal control is working on declaring the dog as dangerous.
